Teaching assistant project: Yvette’s attached garage

Yvette has been turning inspiration into action with practical skills learned in our homebuilding courses.

Last year she built an impressive wood-drying shed, and this year she’s building something bigger!

Tell us about your project.

I’m building an attached garage. The back has a really nice view, perfect for a large window. So I took the Hammerstone Tiny House Window Installation class. After I framed the rest of the garage, I applied info from the class to design and build the rough opening for the window.

Where are you at right now in construction?

The structure is complete and I am now framing the walls. The class was a great review for framing windows - learning about kings, jacks, etc. So I was able to apply that information and design and build the rough opening. Once the window arrives, I can use my knowledge and experience to install it. It’s a very specific skill and the class definitely provided the information and practice, so I can now say with confidence “I got this!”

We look forward to seeing Yvette’s project evolve and we're beyond proud to have her on our teaching team! Remember: anyone can learn how to build a house.
