Description:
Back in the day, if you wanted to round over the edge of your table top, or put a chamfer on a table leg, you’d have to reach for a handplane. Some woodworkers continue to do this type of detail work with hand tools, but if you’re in production mode, or if you haven’t yet mastered all the hand skills, the router is the tool you’ll reach for.
A router is a simple tool consisting of a motor that holds a spinning bit, with a base attached to it. Different bits will cut different profiles on your work. But routers can be used for much more. In conjunction with a template, routers can cut your work pieces to specific and repeatable shapes. And there are about a bazillion jigs made for routers to cut all kinds of joinery.
But don’t let the simplicity deceive you. The router can be quite dangerous if used incorrectly. In this tutorial we’ll practice safe router use, as well as review many ways routers can transform your work and your working methods.
